Imari
Porcelain Vase Pair (Arita, 18th c.)
A matched pair of Imari porcelain vases from the Arita kilns, Saga prefecture, Japan, dating to the mid-18th century. The distinctive underglaze blue and overglaze iron-red with gold decoration depicts the classic "Imari" pattern: chrysanthemums, peonies, and phoenixes in a garden landscape. Each vase stands 42 cm tall on a foot ring etched with double blue circles. The pieces were exported to Europe during the height of the Japan trade and entered the collection of a Dutch merchant family in Amsterdam, where they remained until 2019. Matching pairs in this condition are exceptionally rare.
